The Macmillan Carers Service

The Macmillan Carers Service provides support to people caring for someone approaching the end of life with any terminal illness or life limiting condition. This carers service is provided across the whole of Essex including Southend and Thurrock. A carer is someone who takes responsibility for a relative, partner or friend who has a health problem or disability. It can be a difficult time and often carer’s find it hard to see the impact their caring role has on them and explain how they feel. Carers often put their own needs last and are unaware of the types of support that is available to help in some way. The aim of our service is to offer people emotional and practical support to help them continue in their caring role and also to think about their own needs. We offer a one to one service that allows carers to choose when and where they may like to access support; our friendly Macmillan Carer Support workers can visit carers in their home or any place they feel comfortable. Sometimes simply having someone to talk to on the telephone can make a difference in helping to cope with looking after someone who is approaching the end of life. Areas we can support with are; explaining palliative care services, helping to plan what would happen in an emergency, completing a carers assessment, finding how to get respite and a break, having difficult conversations, where to get equipment, applying for benefits and finances, Power of Attorney, Wills, blue badge forms and grants. Our trusted support continues to be offered through the first year of bereavement, helping carers adjust to the loss of their loved one and the new life ahead.
